Yesterday I ventured out to a new retro-game store for the first time. I had never been before because it is located all the way out in Dazaifu, which is about a 2 hour bike ride away, much too long a ride for it to have fallen into my regular rounds.
I`m going to do a full review of the store sometime this week because it is quite a good one, but in this post I thought I`d just bring attention to some of the crazy retro stuff I found in their junk section. The above picture is of a box of stuff you could have for 500 yen (about 6$). For that you get a Famicom (missing controllers), four Super Famicom consoles, a Gameboy, a mat game of some sort and a few other odds and ends in there. That is a pretty crazy deal, even if none of the stuff works, but there was no way in hell I was going to pedal for 2 hours with that much crap so I gave it a miss.
Another interesting thing they had was this:
If I am counting correctly that is 30 Sega Saturn games for 380 yen (about $4.50), or about 15 cents each. I don`t know anything about the Saturn so I don`t know if there were any good games in there but for that price? Wow.
I didn`t buy that either though. I have a rule against buying games on disc-based systems so the Saturn is not in my collection.
Anyway, I just thought these things were kind of neat. I love finding bargains even if I don`t actually buy them!
I did however walk out of there with a huge pile of stuff that I did fell was worth pedaling two hours for. That`ll have to wait for the next post.
You have a rule that you don't buy games on disc-based systems? Why's that? Just to cut down on the number of games/systems you buy? Or is it because you prefer cartridges and all that?
ReplyDeleteI'd tell you that you *really* should get yourself an original PlayStation and a Saturn and/or Dreamcast at some point, but I guess it wouldn't do much good, would it?
I'm holding you to buying a Saturn once you have a bigger place. I'll remind you, just wait! But hey, glad to see you've found another retro gaming store. Can't wait to see your review of it!
ReplyDeleteMan, that's one impressive looking stash there! It frequently amazes me how much the japanese can get for so little, while I have to fork out loads of cash just for one measly Famicom game.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of those Family Trainer games from yesterday, are you willing to take the dog out so you can try 'em and post the results for us?
Not too surprised about the Saturn bundle deal. Its very easy to accumulate a lot of shovelware on the import Saturn. You see big bundles of unwanted titles for peanuts on Yahoo Japan quite often.
ReplyDeleteBryan - mostly its just because I need somewhere to draw the line. I`m not really interested in new games and that cart/ disc transition in the 90s seemed a good place to cut it off. I actually have a PS2 though so its not an absolute rule!
ReplyDeleteSkyrunner - maybe someday:)
Kaibun - Yeah, if you are lucky you can find some great deals like that here. I havent gotten around to trying out my Family Trainer stuff yet, hopefully someday!
Stealthlurker - yeah I`ve seen a lot of Saturn, Playstation and the occasional Super Famicom bundles selling for incredibly cheap like that, but this is the cheapest price- per-game bundle I`ve ever come across.
Here in Maine (yeah I know) we have a store called BullMoose Music that sells retro game stuff, its a local store. They often have crazy stuff, like last year I picked up a classic gameboy with vontage Nintendo carrying bag and half a dozen game manuals, all for about eight bucks.
ReplyDeleteGlad to know that bargains can be found the world over - even Maine! :)
ReplyDeleteWoah, woah, woah. The saturn has a lot of bad-ass games, I so wish I was there to buy them. I mean, it's doubtful that's any of it's great games, but it is extremely awesome.
ReplyDeleteYeah, just for that price it would have been worth it. With that many there was bound to be at least one good one (which would alone be enough to justify 380 yen)!
ReplyDeleteAt those prices it's well worth the two hour ride Sean!! Amazing stuff.
ReplyDeleteThe only trouble is riding home with a bag full of gear, but it's problems like these that always are an afterthought. :D
LOL yes they are (an afterthought). Actually the problem there was that I had bought so many games I couldn`t carry the junk consoles even if I wanted to!
ReplyDeleteAt the shop that used to be down the road from my house I used to find junk bargains like this sometimes. There I could take advantage since I only lived a 10 minute ride away and even if I bought so much that I was overloaded (as sometimes happened) I could just pile it everywhere I could on the bike and walk it home:)
This is such a great post regarding on junk bins gta, better to keep on posting with this kind of information.
ReplyDeleteOh nooo, I want that Saturn collection :( I love Japanese Saturn games. It must have more games than any other system that weren't released over here...
