Behold. MEGADRIVEASAURUS!

This will not help my attempts to reduce my store stalking at Omocha Souko.

I found the above mountain of Sega Mega Drive.....stuff.....all attached together in one of the junk bins at Omocha Souko today. What you`ve got there is your standard Mega Drive with a Mega CD Drive on the bottom:
And a Super 32X on top:
The dog was sold seperately.

The junk bin consoles cost 300 yen each. I picked this up and was really curious what they would charge me. I mean, this is really three consoles, but when they are all attached together like that don`t they become one? When I was a kid one of my friends had a whole bunch of transformers shaped like construction equipment - the Constructicons - and, if you collected them all, they could be formed together to make one giant robot.

Yes, I think that is a pretty good analogy. Once formed together the individual Constructicons would lose their individuality and merely become parts of a greater whole. Likewise, the various Mega Drive related consoles when formed together cease to exist as individual consoles and become....

MEGADRIVEASAURUS!

Anyway, anybody want to guess how much I paid for this? 300 yen or 900? Either way it was a pretty good deal. I haven`t actually gotten around to finding out if it works yet. I hope it does, I have a Star Wars 32X game that I`ve been dying to play for ages.

  1. Stick a Game Genie with Sonic and Knuckles on top and Sonic 3 in the S&K cartridge and you've got a real monster.

  2. The Mega CD looks like a VCR.

Good luck getting everything to work. With the American ones at least, I heard everything is a bit finicky. Plus, I heard they all need their own power supplies. So, you might need to go buy a mile long power strip.

    Regardless, very cool find.

  3. OK, I bow down to you for this one, Sean! Oh, and I'm going to guess that you paid just 300 yen for the whole shebang :)

I remember when the Mega/Sega CD came out, by the way, and I was *obsessed* with it at the time. These days the thing does look a bit, er, garish (and huge!), but back in the day I quite like its look.

Anyway, I'll be interested to hear if it works. I sure hope it does! And if it does, you should go out and get a few of the CD games worth playing on the system -- like Lunar and Keio Flying Squadron.

  4. Retr0gamer - Yeah, I`ve seen pictures of that! It seems there is almost no limit to how large you can make a Mega Drive/ Genesis with all the add ons!

Nate - I noticed that it looks like a VCR too. Its been so long since I`ve had a VCR that it kind of makes me nostialgic for them too. I picked up seperate power supplies for each of them from the same junk bin, the only thing I am missing is the cable that connects the 32X to the Mega Drive.

Bryan - Yup, just 300 yen for the whole thing! I agree too, it does look garish. And HEAVY! I had a really hard time carrying this monster home on my bike! I`ll post updates if I get everything to work!

  5. That's an awesome pick up. The Model 1 Mega CD is so much more visually appealing than the model 2 in my opinion. Now you need to track down a copy of Snatcher to show it the proper love it deserves! Also the Master System converter also stacks nicely on top of the MD.

  6. Snatcher was never released for the Japanese Mega CD. The US/EU Sega CD version is a port of the PC Engine CD version (which was an upgraded version of the MSX version, and later upgrading again on the PS1/Saturn).

  7. ...How the heck does someone get THAT FREAKING LUCKY at the same store so many times consistently?! I mean, I thought I had luck finding deals at garage sales and the like, but GEEZ! Send me some of your luck via psychic link, huh? I could use some!

  8. Zen Lunatic - yeah I love the look of the one I got (this one is model 1, right?). Looks quite sleak.

Breetai - no Snatcher for the Japanese one? Bummer!

Skyrunner - part of it is luck, part of it is just plain old stubborness as I visit that shop almost everyday! ;) I will send you some of my luck via whatever method I can think of;)

  9. Sean - Yep you have the Model 1, The Model 2 is the one that sits next to the Genesis and has a top-loading CD-ROM.

  10. Oh yeah, I definitely like the Model 1 better than that one which sits next to the Genesis!

  13. Sweet! I've never been too fussed about the 32X but I love the MD1 and MCD1, they look great together. I've always wanted a Japanese MegaDrive too. The cosmetic differences are minor but I still think it looks better :P

p.s. Given your run of luck lately, I reckon you got the lot for 300...

  14. Yup, 300:)

I like the look of it too (The MCD and the Japanese Mega Drive, not so much the 32X). It looks like a really really cool VCR;)

  15. Good catch. By the way, what is the revision of Mega Drive?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Thanks! I don`t know, I`m mainly a Famicom guy so I didn`t even know the Mega Drive had different revisions! How do you check which revision a Mega Drive is? :)

  17. three consoles that form one... but now you need three power supplies (and an extra lead) to use it :P fucking Sega!

  18. LOL, yes that is one among the many problems I am having with this Mega Drive....mess. The other problem is that the three of them stack up so tall that I cannot fit them into the shelf on my TV stand where I keep my consoles!
